About this tool

Torque is force times distance — how hard you twist. A wrench tightening a bolt at 100 N·m applies 100 newtons at one metre from the centre of the bolt. Car specifications list engine torque in N·m or lb·ft, torque wrench settings come in N·m or kgf·m, and older American specs use lb·in. This converter does the arithmetic between all of them.

The SI unit is the newton-metre (N·m). The kilogram-force metre (kgf·m) uses the weight of one kilogram under standard gravity (9.80665 m/s²), which is why 1 kgf·m = 9.80665 N·m exactly. The pound-foot (lb·ft) and pound-inch (lb·in) are the imperial equivalents.

Frequently asked questions

Is kgf·m the same as kg·m?

In practice, yes — "kgf" (kilogram-force) is the weight of one kilogram under standard gravity. The "f" is often dropped in informal use.

My car manual says 150 lb·ft. What is that in N·m?

About 203 N·m (multiply by 1.3558).

Does my data leave my browser?
