About this tool

Density is mass per unit volume, and the confusion usually starts with the units. Water at 4 °C has a density of 1000 kg/m³, which is the same as 1 g/cm³, which is the same as 1 g/mL, which is the same as 1 kg/L. Those four are numerically identical because the CGS system was built so that they would be. The imperial system breaks the pattern: water is about 62.4 lb/ft³.

This converter handles the standard set of density units used in physics, chemistry, engineering and industrial specification. The factors are exact definitions — they come from the relationships between the metre, the centimetre, the litre, the kilogram, the pound and the foot.

Yes, exactly. One millilitre is defined as one cubic centimetre.

What is the density of water?

1000 kg/m³ = 1 g/cm³ = 1 g/mL = 1 kg/L at 4 °C. At room temperature it is very slightly less.

What is the difference between density and specific gravity?

Specific gravity is the ratio of a substance's density to the density of water. It is dimensionless: a material with SG 2.5 is 2.5 times denser than water, regardless of the unit system.
