Speech to Text

Dictate and see your words appear as text — using your browser's built-in speech recognition, no installation needed.

Nothing is recorded or uploaded: the stream stays on your device and stops when you leave this page.

How to use

  1. Select the language you will speak — the recognition engine uses it to choose the right model.
  2. Click "Start listening" and speak clearly. Your words appear as text in real time.
  3. Click "Stop" when done. Copy the text with one click or edit it in the text area.

About this tool

This tool uses the Web Speech API built into Chrome, Edge and some other browsers to convert spoken words into text. It does not install anything — the recognition engine is part of the browser itself, and the audio is processed by the browser vendor's servers (Google for Chrome, Microsoft for Edge). No audio is sent to Vai.la.

Accuracy depends on the microphone quality, the background noise and the language. Portuguese, English and Spanish are well supported; smaller languages may have lower accuracy. The tool shows interim results as you speak (greyed out) and final results when the engine is confident (solid text). Punctuation is not reliable — you may need to add it manually.

Browser support: Chrome and Edge have the best speech recognition. Firefox and Safari have limited or no support for the Web Speech API. If your browser does not support it, the tool says so and suggests an alternative.

Frequently asked questions

Is my audio sent to a server?

It is sent to the browser vendor (Google for Chrome, Microsoft for Edge) for processing. It is NOT sent to Vai.la. If privacy is a concern, check the vendor's terms.

Why does it not work in Firefox?

Firefox does not support the Web Speech API for speech recognition. Use Chrome or Edge.

Can I dictate in Portuguese?

Yes — select "Português (BR)" from the language dropdown. Portuguese recognition in Chrome is good.

Does it add punctuation?

Sometimes, but unreliably. You will usually need to add commas, periods and question marks manually.

Can I edit the text while dictating?

Yes, but be aware that the recognition engine may overwrite the text area. It is safer to stop, edit, and start again.
