Character & Word Counter

Count characters, words, lines and paragraphs in real time as you type or paste.

How to use

  1. Type or paste your text in the field below.
  2. The counters update live: characters (with and without spaces), words, lines and paragraphs.
  3. Use the platform limits panel to see how your text fits the most common social and SEO limits.

About this tool

Every platform imposes its own text limits: an X post caps at 280 characters, an Instagram bio at 150, a Google title tag renders well up to about 60, and a meta description up to about 160. Writing against those limits without a counter means guessing — this tool shows every number as you type, in real time.

The word count follows the same convention used by word processors: sequences of characters separated by whitespace. Accented characters and emoji count as characters exactly as platforms count them, so what you see here is what the platform will enforce.

The text stays in your browser. Nothing you type or paste is transmitted, which makes the counter safe for drafts, confidential copy and unpublished content.

Frequently asked questions

Do emoji and accents count as one character?

They count the way platforms count them. Most emoji count as more than one character on X, for example — the counter mirrors real-world behavior.

How are words counted?

Sequences separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks — the same rule as word processors.

Is my text saved anywhere?

No. Counting happens locally in your browser and the text is discarded when you leave the page.

What are the main limits I should know?

X post: 280. Instagram bio: 150. Instagram caption: 2,200. Google title: ~60. Meta description: ~160. WhatsApp status: 139. The panel below the counter lists them live against your text.
