About this tool

Syllable separation in Portuguese follows rules that are more consistent than most people think, but they are not obvious. A consonant cluster like "br" stays together because it is an inseparable group, but "rs" splits because both consonants can start a syllable on their own. Falling diphthongs like "ai" stay in one syllable, but rising diphthongs like "ia" may split depending on whether the stress falls on them. The rules are taught in school and used every time a word is broken at the end of a line — but most people forget them the moment they leave school, and spell-checkers do not show them.

This tool applies the phonological rules of Brazilian Portuguese: it identifies vowels and consonants, recognizes inseparable consonant clusters (bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fl, fr, gl, gr, pl, pr, tl, tr, ch, lh, nh, qu, gu), detects falling diphthongs that stay together, and splits hiatus vowels that belong to different syllables. The result is shown with hyphens between syllables, along with the count and the classification — monosyllable, disyllable, trisyllable or polysyllable.

The separation runs entirely in your browser, with no dictionary lookup and no network request. The algorithm handles regular Portuguese words well; proper nouns, foreign words and unusual compounds may not split perfectly because they do not always follow the standard phonological rules. For official purposes — school homework, typesetting, legal documents — consult a dictionary.

Frequently asked questions

Does this follow the official rules?

It follows the phonological rules of Brazilian Portuguese as taught in school — inseparable clusters, diphthongs, and hiatus rules. For edge cases and proper nouns, consult a dictionary.

Does my text leave my browser?

No. The algorithm runs locally with no network requests.

Why does it get some words wrong?

Foreign words, proper nouns and unusual compounds may not follow standard phonological rules. The algorithm handles regular Portuguese vocabulary well.

Can I separate multiple words at once?

Yes. Type or paste several words separated by spaces and each one is separated individually.

What is a polysyllable?

A word with four or more syllables. Portuguese classifies words as monosyllable (1), disyllable (2), trisyllable (3) or polysyllable (4+).
