The A series is one of the most elegant standards in everyday use. ISO 216 starts from A0, defined as a sheet of exactly one square metre whose sides are in the ratio of 1 to √2 (about 1.414), which works out to 841 × 1189 mm. Every following size is that sheet cut in half across its longer side: A1 is 594 × 841, A2 is 420 × 594, A4 is 210 × 297, and so on down to A10 at 26 × 37 mm. Because the √2 ratio is preserved by halving, every A size has the same proportions — which is why an A4 document scales onto A3 or A5 with no cropping and no empty margins, and why "print two pages per sheet" always works. The B series fills the gaps between A sizes and starts at B0 = 1000 × 1414 mm, the reason B4 and B5 are common for books and posters.
North America never adopted ISO 216, so Letter (216 × 279 mm, sold as 8.5 × 11 inches), Legal (216 × 356 mm) and Tabloid (279 × 432 mm) follow no ratio rule at all and do not scale into one another. Brazil is a hybrid case: A4 is the office and legal standard, but Ofício II — 216 × 330 mm — is still used for certain documents and is included here. This reference lists all of them side by side, so you can see at a glance that Letter is a little wider and noticeably shorter than A4, the difference that breaks layouts crossing between the two.
The pixel figures are what turn this from a table into a working tool. Pixels are calculated as millimetres ÷ 25.4 × DPI and rounded to the nearest whole pixel, the same arithmetic every layout program applies: A4 comes out at 595 × 842 px at 72 DPI (the point size PDFs use), 2480 × 3508 px at 300 DPI (the standard for commercial printing), and 4961 × 7016 px at 600 DPI. Use them to set up a canvas in Photoshop, Figma, Canva or GIMP at the right resolution, to check whether a photo has enough pixels to print full-page without softening, or to size an export for a print shop. Pixels = millimetres ÷ 25.4 × DPI, rounded to the nearest whole pixel. The A series follows ISO 216: A0 has an area of 1 m² with sides in the ratio 1 : √2, and each subsequent size halves the previous one across the longer side. Example: A4 is 210 × 297 mm, so at 300 DPI it is 210 ÷ 25.4 × 300 = 2480 px wide and 297 ÷ 25.4 × 300 = 3508 px tall.
A4 is 210 × 297 mm, which is 21 × 29.7 cm or 8.27 × 11.69 inches. At 300 DPI it becomes 2480 × 3508 pixels.
2480 × 3508 pixels. The formula is millimetres ÷ 25.4 × DPI, so 210 ÷ 25.4 × 300 = 2480 and 297 ÷ 25.4 × 300 = 3508. At 72 DPI the same sheet is 595 × 842 px, and at 600 DPI it is 4961 × 7016 px.
Because the ratio between the sides is 1 : √2, the only ratio preserved when you cut a rectangle in half across its longer side. That is what lets an A4 layout scale to A3 or A5 without cropping or leftover margins.
Letter (216 × 279 mm) is 6 mm wider and 18 mm shorter than A4 (210 × 297 mm). They belong to different standards, so a document laid out for one can lose content or gain margins when printed on the other.
300 DPI is the standard for commercial printing and photography, 150 DPI is usually enough for large posters seen from a distance, and 72 DPI matters only for screen and PDF point sizes. Going above 300 DPI rarely improves a printed result but multiplies the file size.
