Horsepower (HP) and cavalo-vapor (CV) are not the same thing, and confusing them is one of the oldest mistakes in automotive and industrial specs. HP is the British unit defined by James Watt: 1 HP = 745.69987 watts. CV is the metric horsepower used in continental Europe and Brazil: 1 CV = 735.49875 watts. The difference is about 1.4%.
In Brazil, vehicle power is almost always stated in CV, but engine specs from the United States or Japan use HP. Air conditioners use BTU/h. This converter handles all four and converts to kW, which is the SI unit and the one that always works.
One caveat: "horsepower" has several definitions depending on the context — mechanical, electrical, boiler, metric. This tool uses mechanical HP (the one on car specs) and metric CV.

CV — cavalo-vapor. When a Brazilian car is listed at "170 cv", that is the metric unit.
They use BTU/h (British Thermal Units per hour). A 12,000 BTU/h unit is about 3,516 watts or 4.78 CV.
