The golden hour is the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset, when sunlight travels through more atmosphere and turns warm and soft. The blue hour is the 20-30 minutes before sunrise and after sunset, when the sky is deep blue and the light is cool and even.
This calculator uses a simplified solar position model based on the declination of the sun and the latitude. The times are in solar time — to get clock time, add your UTC offset and the equation of time (which can shift the result by up to 15 minutes depending on the time of year).
The tool is meant for photography planning, not for astronomical precision. For exact sunrise/sunset times, use a dedicated ephemeris or your phone's weather app.
Solar declination δ = 23.45° × sin(360/365 × (284 + day_of_year)). Hour angle = arccos(−tan(lat) × tan(δ)). Sunrise/sunset = 12 ∓ HA/15.
The model uses a simplified declination formula and does not account for atmospheric refraction, the equation of time, or your longitude within the timezone.
