Calculate how much of the scene is in focus — near limit, far limit and hyperfocal distance — from focal length, aperture and distance.
Depth of field is the range of distances in front of the camera that appear acceptably sharp in the final image. It depends on three things: the focal length (longer = shallower), the aperture (wider = shallower) and the distance to the subject (closer = shallower). A 50 mm lens at f/1.8 focused at 2 metres on a full-frame sensor gives a depth of field of only about 18 cm — enough for a face, not for a group.
The calculation uses the circle of confusion (CoC), which is the largest blur circle that still looks like a point in the final print. Smaller sensors have a smaller CoC because they need more enlargement to produce the same print size, which is why a phone camera at f/1.8 has more depth of field than a full-frame camera at f/1.8 — the phone sensor is much smaller.
The hyperfocal distance is the closest focus distance at which infinity is still acceptably sharp. For landscape photography, focusing at the hyperfocal distance maximises the depth of field from half that distance to infinity. At 24 mm f/11 on full frame, the hyperfocal is about 1.7 metres — focus there and everything from 0.85 m to infinity is sharp.
