This is a browser-based sound level meter that reads your device microphone through the Web Audio API and shows the approximate level in decibels. It is not a calibrated instrument — phone and laptop microphones are not designed for measurement, and the number you see is an estimate, not a certified reading.
The reading is calculated from the RMS (root mean square) of the audio samples, converted to decibels with a reference calibration of 94 dB SPL at full scale. The colour bar goes from green (quiet) through yellow (moderate) to red (loud or dangerous). The labels — library, conversation, traffic — are standard reference levels published in acoustic textbooks.
No audio is recorded, stored or transmitted. The microphone stream is analysed in real time and discarded. Permission is requested only when you press Start, and the microphone is released when you press Stop.
dB = 20 × log10(RMS) + 94, where RMS is the root mean square of the audio samples and 94 dB SPL is the reference calibration.
