The Brazilian minimum wage is set by the federal government, usually once a year in January, by decree or provisional measure. It applies to every CLT worker whose category does not have a higher floor, and it also defines the base for several social benefits including retirement pensions, unemployment insurance and the BPC (continuous cash benefit). The history table starts in 1994, when Brazil adopted the Real and the minimum wage became comparable in real terms. Before that, hyperinflation made the nominal values meaningless — the minimum wage was adjusted every month, sometimes every week, in currencies that no longer exist. The daily value in the table divides the monthly amount by 30, which is the legal convention (CLT art. 64). The hourly value divides by 220, the standard monthly hours for a 44-hour week (CLT art. 7, XIII).
