The bitcoin cash price in reais with the time the quote was taken, a two-way converter, and the argument of 2017 that created this coin.
Bitcoin Cash (BCH): R$ 1.281,36, +10,42%.
Bitcoin cash exists because of an argument about a number. Bitcoin's blocks were capped at one megabyte, and by 2017 the network was full: fees had climbed past the point where paying for small things made sense. One camp wanted to raise the cap and keep everyday transactions on the chain; the other wanted to leave it alone and move those payments to a second layer. Neither convinced the other, so in August 2017 the first camp changed the rule and left with a copy of the ledger: everyone holding bitcoin at block 478,558 also held the same amount of bitcoin cash the next morning. The new chain kept the 21 million cap, the ten-minute blocks and the halving schedule, and raised the block limit — to eight megabytes, then thirty-two.
What followed is the part the promotional material skips. In November 2018 the chain split again, into bitcoin cash and Bitcoin SV, after rival camps spent days pointing competing mining power at each other. In November 2020 it split once more, over a proposal to divert part of the mining reward to fund development. Each split divided the community and the hash rate behind it. Meanwhile the market answered the original question its own way: bitcoin kept the name, the liquidity and the institutional money, cheap payments largely moved to dollar stablecoins on other networks, and bitcoin cash lost the great majority of its value measured against bitcoin. It is a payment network that works, with a fraction of the relevance it had at birth.
Little specific to bitcoin cash moves the price any more: it follows bitcoin with a wider swing, plus whatever attention a halving or a listing brings. In Brazil the commonest reason to look this up is not a purchase — exchanges here credited bitcoin cash to customers who held bitcoin in August 2017, so plenty of people own an amount they never chose to buy. Selling it is a taxable event, and the Brazilian rules on what is exempt have changed recently, so check the current ones. The value at the top is a CoinGecko reference averaged across exchanges, saved by a job that runs every half hour, with the moment of the quote beside it.
From CoinGecko, an average across many exchanges, saved by a job that runs every 30 minutes; the date and time of that quote are printed under the value. Press "Refresh rate" and your browser fetches the current one directly. BCH trades at weekends too.
Because this is an average reference, not an offer. An exchange quotes a buying and a selling price with a spread between them, charges a trading fee and charges again on withdrawal, so a difference of a couple of per cent is ordinary.
The block size, and everything that followed from it. Bitcoin cash raised the limit so transactions stay cheap on the chain itself, which is why a transfer costs a fraction of a centavo; bitcoin kept its blocks small and pushes small payments to other layers. Both share the 21 million cap and the halving schedule.
Because of how the split worked: anyone holding bitcoin when the chain divided in August 2017 ended up with an identical balance on the new chain, and Brazilian exchanges credited it to their customers. Much of the traffic to this page is people checking what an unplanned holding is worth.
Some. Fees of a fraction of a centavo and ten-minute confirmations make it usable, and there are merchants and processors that take it. But that volume is small next to trading volume, and cheap digital payments were largely taken over by dollar stablecoins.
