About this tool

XRP is not mined, and never was. All 100 billion units existed from the first day in 2012, and the ledger they live on settles a transfer in three to five seconds for a fee of fractions of a cent — a fee destroyed rather than paid to anyone, so the supply falls very slowly. Three names get mixed up constantly: Ripple is a company in San Francisco, the XRP Ledger is the open network, XRP is the coin. The company took most of the supply at the start and locked much of it in escrow, releasing up to a billion units a month.

The pitch has always been settlement between institutions: instead of keeping money parked in accounts around the world so that payments can land, buy XRP at one end and sell it at the other in seconds. For a Brazilian the version that matters is remittance — money sent abroad or received from abroad. The honest part is twofold. Adoption has been far smaller than the marketing suggested, with several announced partnerships using Ripple's software without touching the coin. And a fast, cheap transfer does not remove the cost that actually hurts: you still convert reais at one end and another currency at the other, and each conversion carries a spread.

The lawsuit is why many people here know the name. In December 2020 the United States securities regulator sued Ripple, arguing XRP had been sold as an unregistered security; the price collapsed and American exchanges delisted it. In July 2023 a federal judge split the question — sales on open exchanges were not securities transactions, sales to institutions were — a civil penalty of roughly 125 million dollars followed in 2024, and the appeals were dropped in 2025, leaving that split ruling standing. What the episode shows is how much of this price is a bet on regulation rather than on payment volume. Add the concentration — a company still holds a large share and releases more each month — and the volatility every crypto has. The price above is a market reference from CoinGecko; your exchange charges its own spread and fees.

Frequently asked questions

Where does this price come from, and how old is the number?

From CoinGecko, which averages the price across exchanges. A scheduled job stores it here every 30 minutes, and the date and time of that quote are printed under the value. The refresh button fetches the current price live from your browser. Crypto trades on weekends and holidays too, so this number does not sit still the way a currency quote does.

Why is the price on my exchange different from the one here?

Because this is a market average, not an offer. Your exchange quotes a buy and a sell price with a spread between them, adds a trading fee, and prices its own dollar conversion into the real. Compare what you would actually pay against the reference here: that difference is the cost.

What is the difference between Ripple and XRP?

Ripple is a private company selling software to financial institutions. XRP is a coin on the XRP Ledger, a public network that would keep running if the company vanished. Not the same thing — but not independent: the company holds a large share of the supply, and its news moves the price.

How did the lawsuit against Ripple end?

The regulator sued in December 2020; in July 2023 a judge ruled that exchange sales were not securities transactions while institutional sales were; a civil penalty followed in 2024; the appeals were dropped in 2025, leaving that ruling standing. It is a closed case, not a blanket approval of anything.

Do banks actually use XRP?

Some payment providers do, in specific corridors, but far fewer than years of announcements implied — and many of those deals involved Ripple's software rather than the coin. Treating a declared partnership as proof of use is the commonest mistake in news about XRP.
