How to use

  1. Read the Toncoin price in reais at the top, with the date and time of the quote printed under it.
  2. Type an amount in either field — the table runs from one coin to a thousand, and the reverse column from R$ 50 upwards.
  3. Press "Refresh rate" for the current value. The network runs every day, so this number moves at weekends too.

About this tool

Toncoin is the token of The Open Network, and the history matters before you convert anything. Telegram designed the chain in 2018 and raised about US$ 1.7 billion for a token called Gram. American regulators sued, a court blocked the distribution, and in May 2020 Telegram walked away — returning most of the money and paying a penalty. Independent developers picked up the abandoned open-source code and relaunched it as The Open Network. Telegram neither owns nor controls it, but has since embraced it: a wallet inside the app, channel owners paid in Toncoin for advertising, in-app purchases running through it. That link to a messenger with hundreds of millions of users is the whole investment case — a relationship rather than a contract.

The chain is built around sharding: it splits into more shards as load grows, which is how fees stay at fractions of a centavo during a rush. The cost is a design in which contracts talk to each other asynchronously, by message, which developers find markedly harder to get right than Ethereum's. Neither moved the price in 2024. What did was tap-to-earn games inside Telegram — Notcoin, then Hamster Kombat — which brought tens of millions of players in weeks and then lost most of their token value about as fast. And when Telegram's founder Pavel Durov was arrested in France in August 2024, Toncoin fell sharply within a day. Few assets are attached this directly to the legal position of one person and one app.

The number at the top is a CoinGecko reference, averaged across exchanges and stored by a job that runs every half hour, with the exact moment beside it; an exchange adds its own spread and charges on the trade and the withdrawal. The Brazilian reason to be here is usually Telegram, widely used in Brazil — so be clear about what that gives you. The wallet in the app is convenient. The token is a separate bet: on an ownership structure in which the foundation and early participants hold large blocks, and on activity that has so far been games and airdrops rather than payments people would have made anyway.

Frequently asked questions

Where does this number come from, and how old is it?

From CoinGecko, which averages the price across many exchanges, saved here by a job that runs every 30 minutes; the date and time of that quote sit under the value. Press "Refresh rate" and your browser fetches the current one directly. Toncoin trades every day, weekends included.

Why is the price at my exchange different from the one here?

Because this is an average reference, not an offer. An exchange quotes a buying and a selling price with a spread between them, charges a trading fee and charges again to withdraw, so a gap of a couple of per cent is normal and a small order widens it.

Is Toncoin the same thing as Telegram's Gram?

Same code, different token. Gram never launched: a court blocked it and Telegram abandoned the project in 2020, returning investors' money. Volunteers relaunched the open-source chain as The Open Network, and Telegram later adopted it for wallets, ad payouts and in-app purchases. Telegram is the chain's main source of users, but promises nothing about the token.

Is the wallet inside Telegram my wallet?

Not always, and the difference matters. Telegram offers a custodial wallet run by a third party, where that company holds the keys, alongside a self-custodial option where the keys are on your phone and a lost recovery phrase means lost coins. Check which one you are in before moving an amount you care about.
