Tether, ticker USDT, is a token whose issuer undertakes to keep it worth one US dollar and, since 2014, has mostly managed to. That property made it the most traded asset in crypto, and it matters in Brazil for a reason unrelated to investing. It is how many people receive dollars from abroad: a freelancer paid by an American client, someone employed remotely by a foreign company, a family sending money home. The dollars arrive as USDT in a wallet and are sold for reais on a local exchange, in minutes, at any hour, weekends included.
What that appeal hides is that a stablecoin is a promise, not a law of physics, and this one has been tested. In October 2018 USDT traded near 0.85 dollars on some exchanges; in May 2022, during the collapse of Terra, it slipped to about 0.95 for a day. It returned to a dollar both times, but it left the peg. The backing matters too: Tether publishes quarterly attestations, which are not full audits, over reserves dominated by short-term US Treasury bills but also holding gold, bitcoin and secured loans — assets whose own value moves. In 2021 the CFTC fined the company over past claims that every token had always been fully backed by dollars.
Which brings you to the number at the top, and to what most pages get wrong: it is not the commercial dollar. USDT in reais is a crypto market price, set by local supply and demand on Brazilian exchanges rather than by the interbank market, and it habitually trades at a premium — occasionally a discount — over the commercial rate. Put the two side by side and the gap is visible; it widens when everyone wants dollars at once. Receiving dollars this way is also not outside Brazilian rules: there are reporting obligations to the Receita Federal, gains can be taxable, and those rules have been changing.

Because this is an aggregated reference and an exchange is quoting you an offer: it buys below the market, sells above it and charges trading and withdrawal fees. Compare the reais that actually land in your account with the number here.
Because they are two different markets. The commercial dollar is the interbank reference; the USDT price in reais comes from Brazilian crypto order books, where local demand for dollars and the cost of moving money in and out set it. The result is usually a premium over the commercial rate, sometimes a discount.
It can, and it has — twice, in 2018 and during the Terra collapse of 2022, recovering both times. Parity is a commitment by a company, backed by reserves reported through attestations rather than full audits. Treat a stablecoin as a claim on an issuer, not as a dollar.
Ask whoever is receiving it and match it exactly. The same token exists on several blockchains — Tron and Ethereum carry most of the volume — and the fees differ enormously. Sending on a network the destination address does not support usually loses the money for good. Send a test amount first when an address is new.
