A palindrome is a word or sentence that reads the same forwards and backwards — "level", "radar", the Portuguese classics "arara" and "Socorram-me, subi no ônibus em Marrocos", or the English staple "A man, a plan, a canal: Panama". By convention, letter case, accents, spaces and punctuation do not count: what matters is the bare sequence of letters and digits. That convention is exactly what the checkboxes here control, so you can also switch to the strict character-by-character definition when a puzzle calls for it.
The check happens in three transparent steps. First the text is normalized according to your options: accents are stripped using Unicode decomposition (á becomes a), everything is lowercased, and any character that is not a letter or digit is removed — the letter-and-digit filter is Unicode-aware, so it works with any alphabet, not just A to Z. Then the normalized string is reversed, iterating by code points so emojis and other multi-byte characters do not break. Finally the two strings are compared: if they match, you have a palindrome.
