Calculate interest and penalty on overdue payments using Brazilian legal standards — 1% per month plus a 2% fine.
Late payment interest in Brazil follows a simple pattern: the debtor owes the principal, a monthly interest rate applied pro rata by day, and a one-time penalty. The most common parameters are 1% per month and a 2% fine, which are the maximums the Consumer Protection Code allows for consumer debts. Business contracts can stipulate different rates, but the structure is the same.
The interest is simple, not compound, and it is pro-rated by calendar day: the monthly rate is divided by 30 and multiplied by the number of days late. The penalty is applied once, on the first day of delay, and does not grow over time. This is the standard used by boletos, utility bills and most commercial invoices in Brazil.
This calculator applies the arithmetic literally. It does not apply monetary correction (IPCA, IGP-M or Selic), which is a separate layer added by court orders and some contracts. If you need monetary correction as well, use it in combination with the inflation correction tool. Everything runs in your browser.
Interest = principal × (monthly rate / 30) × days late. Penalty = principal × penalty rate. Total = principal + interest + penalty.
For consumer debts, yes — the Consumer Protection Code (CDC, art. 52, §1°) caps it at 1% per month. Business contracts between companies can agree on higher rates, subject to the usury law and case law.
No. The 2% penalty is applied once, on the first day of delay. It does not accumulate.
No. Monetary correction (IPCA, IGP-M, Selic) is a separate adjustment that some contracts and court orders add. This tool calculates only the interest and penalty.
No. The calculation runs in JavaScript on your device.
Because the standard Brazilian convention for late payment interest on boletos and consumer debts is simple interest, pro-rated by day. Compound interest (juros compostos) requires an explicit contractual clause and is more common in financial products.
