An image color picker answers a very ordinary question: what exact color is that pixel? A logo you received as a PNG, a screenshot of someone else's site, a photo whose sky you want to match in a gradient — in all of them the color is right there on screen, but the code is not. This tool loads the image into a canvas on your own machine and reads the raw pixel values back out.
The mechanics are simple and worth knowing. The file is read with FileReader as a data URL, drawn once into a canvas at its native resolution, and every reading is a getImageData call on a single pixel — the same four bytes (red, green, blue, alpha) the browser already holds in memory. Because the canvas keeps the original resolution while the page displays it scaled, pointer coordinates are converted back to image coordinates before the read, so the pixel you click is the pixel you get even on a 4000-pixel-wide photo. The magnifier redraws an eleven-by-eleven neighbourhood with image smoothing turned off, which is why you see hard squares instead of a blur, and HSL is derived from the RGB triple with the standard hue-sector formula. If a pixel is fully transparent the tool says so, instead of reporting a meaningless black.
Beyond images, Chromium browsers expose the native EyeDropper API, so where your browser supports it a second button lets you sample any pixel on your whole screen — useful for colors trapped in a video, a PDF viewer or another application. The last eight captures stay in a row of swatches you can click to copy, and the whole set can be downloaded as a plain text file listing the HEX, RGB and HSL of each. Your image is never uploaded: it is read locally, drawn locally, and discarded when you close the page.

PNG, JPEG and WebP — anything your browser can decode. Images up to 8000 pixels per side are accepted; larger files are refused so the canvas does not exhaust your device's memory.
It uses the browser's native EyeDropper API to sample any pixel on your screen, not only inside the loaded image. It appears in Chromium browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Opera and Brave; Firefox and Safari do not support it yet, so the button is simply not shown there.
Usually one of two reasons. JPEG compression alters pixels near sharp edges, and the browser may apply the image's embedded color profile while decoding it. For flat brand colors saved as PNG, the value you get is exact.
Not automatically — this tool captures one click at a time and keeps the last eight colors, which you can download as a text file. Sampling the dominant areas of an image is usually enough to reconstruct a brand palette.
