How to use

  1. Read the price per gram at the top — the international ounce reference converted into the unit sold in Brazil.
  2. Type a weight in grams or an amount in reais to convert either way.
  3. Use the table for the usual weights, reading the result as a wholesale reference for pure 24k gold, not as a shop price.

About this tool

Gold is quoted internationally in troy ounces, and that single fact is where most confusion about its price starts. A troy ounce is exactly 31.1034768 grams — a survivor of the medieval troy weight system, used only for precious metals and noticeably heavier than the 28.35 g ounce on a kitchen scale. Brazilians buy and sell gold by the gram, so a headline about gold passing some figure "an ounce" says almost nothing here until it is divided. This page does that division and shows three units at once: the gram you transact in, the ounce the market quotes, and the kilo, which is how bars and central bank reserves are counted.

What moves the number has two layers, and separating them explains a lot of apparent contradictions. Gold pays no interest and produces no cash flow, so its price is largely the price of not holding something that does: it tends to rise when real interest rates in the United States fall, when the dollar weakens, when central banks buy, and when a crisis makes a non-issued asset attractive. That layer is priced in dollars. The second is Brazilian: the price in reais is the international price times the dollar. Gold can be flat in dollars and still climb in reais because the real weakened. Reading only the reais figure hides which leg moved.

It matters just as much to say what this number is not. It is the reference for pure 24-carat gold in wholesale form. A jeweller neither buys your ring at this price nor sells at it: 18k jewellery is 75% gold by weight, workmanship is charged separately, and a shop's price for scrap carries a wide discount covering melting, assay and resale. Gold as a financial investment in Brazil is a different product again — it trades on B3 as contracts of 250 g, 10 g and 0.225 g through a brokerage authorised by the Banco Central, with fees, custody and tax on gains, so its price tracks this reference without matching it. This page makes no forecast and gives no investment advice.

The formula

Price per gram = XAU-BRL reference ÷ 31.1034768, because one troy ounce is exactly 31.1034768 grams. Price per kilo = price per gram × 1,000. Amount in reais = grams × price per gram, and the reverse divides. The reference is the XAU-BRL quote published by AwesomeAPI for pure gold, stored by a scheduled job every 30 minutes and fetched live only when you press the refresh button.

Frequently asked questions

Where does this gold price come from and how old is it?

From the XAU-BRL quote published by AwesomeAPI, which follows the international gold market in reais. A job on our server stores it every 30 minutes and prints it into the HTML with its date and time. Past two hours the page says the number is old, and the refresh button fetches the current value.

Why will a jeweller not pay me this price?

For the same reason a bank does not sell dollars at the commercial rate: this is a wholesale reference and a shop is retail. It buys scrap at a discount covering melting, assay and resale, and your piece is probably 18k — 75% gold — not the 24k this figure refers to.

Why is gold quoted in ounces if I buy it in grams?

Because the international market has priced precious metals in troy ounces for centuries and never changed. One troy ounce is 31.1034768 g, heavier than the ordinary ounce of 28.35 g. Brazil transacts in grams, so the conversion is the first thing this page does.

Is this 24k gold?

Yes, the reference is for pure gold. To value a piece of lower purity, multiply by its gold content: 18k is 75%, 14k about 58.3%, 12k 50%. That is metal content only, before any deduction a buyer applies and before the workmanship a seller charges.

Why did gold rise in reais but not in dollars?

Because the price in reais is the international price times the dollar. If gold held steady in dollars while the real weakened, the reais figure climbs on its own — which is why a Brazilian watching gold is always watching two markets.

Does this page tell me whether to buy gold?

No. It converts a published reference between units and currencies, makes no forecast and gives no investment advice. What a bar, an ETF or a B3 contract actually costs depends on fees, custody and tax not calculated here.
