Countdown Timer

Count down to any date and time — days, hours, minutes and seconds, live in your browser.

How to use

  1. Set the target date and time, or use the New Year and Christmas presets for the next occurrence.
  2. Give the event a name if you want one, then click "Start countdown".
  3. Watch the days, hours, minutes and seconds tick down live — the target is remembered in this browser for your next visit.

About this tool

A countdown turns a date on the calendar into something you can actually feel. Set the moment — a product launch, an exam, a flight, a wedding, the end of a sale — and the timer shows exactly how many days, hours, minutes and seconds are left, refreshing every second. The New Year and Christmas presets are calculated for the next occurrence, so they keep working year after year without you editing anything. When the counter reaches zero it stops and a highlighted message takes its place; there is no sound and no notification, which makes it safe to leave open on a second screen.

The target you type is read as local wall-clock time — the same clock your device shows — and turned into a timestamp. Every second the tool subtracts the current timestamp from it and splits the remaining milliseconds into days, hours, minutes and seconds with plain integer division. Only the digits on screen are rewritten, never the page around them, so the counter stays smooth and cheap even after hours open in a tab. Because the comparison is between two absolute moments, the countdown stays honest through a daylight-saving change: the clock may jump an hour, the time remaining does not.

The last target and event name are kept in your browser's local storage, so reopening the page picks the countdown up where it was. That storage lives only on this device, is never uploaded, and simply does nothing in private windows where it is blocked — the timer still works, it just starts empty. Nothing you type is sent anywhere: the whole thing is JavaScript running on your machine, which is why it also keeps counting with the connection off.

Frequently asked questions

Does the countdown keep running if I close the tab?

No, it stops when the page closes, but the target is saved in this browser. Reopen the page and the counter resumes at the correct number of seconds.

Which time zone does it use?

Your own device clock and time zone. If your event is set in another country, convert it first with the Time Zone Converter and paste the local result here.

Does it play a sound when it reaches zero?

No. The counter stops at zero and shows a highlighted message on the page. There is no audio and no browser notification, on purpose.

Can I count down to a time in the past?

No. A target that has already passed is treated as finished and shows the end-of-countdown message. To measure a past interval, use a date difference calculator instead.

Is my event saved on a server?

No. The target date and the event name stay in your browser's local storage on this device and are never transmitted or logged.
