How to use

  1. Enter the original amount and select the price index — IPCA for consumer prices, IGP-M for contracts and rent.
  2. Choose the start and end years.
  3. The corrected amount and the accumulated variation appear, with a year-by-year table.

About this tool

Monetary correction updates a past amount to its present-day equivalent by applying the accumulated inflation between two dates. If R$ 1.000,00 in 2015 needs to be corrected to 2025, and the IPCA accumulated 73% in that period, the corrected value is R$ 1.730,00. The original amount did not grow — its purchasing power was measured against a basket of goods that did.

Brazil uses two main indices for monetary correction. The IPCA (Índice de Preços ao Consumidor Amplo, published by IBGE) measures consumer inflation and is the official target of monetary policy. The IGP-M (Índice Geral de Preços — Mercado, published by FGV) includes wholesale and construction prices and is widely used in rent contracts, tuition adjustments and financial instruments. The two can diverge significantly: in 2020, the IGP-M hit 23% while the IPCA stayed at 4.5%.

This tool uses annual rates. For monthly precision, the Banco Central calculator (Calculadora do Cidadão) is the authoritative source. The rates here are reviewed periodically and the date is shown on screen. Everything runs in your browser — the amount you type is not transmitted or stored.

The formula

Corrected = original × product of (1 + annual rate / 100) for each year between the start and end.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use IPCA or IGP-M?

IPCA for consumer purchasing power and general comparisons. IGP-M when the contract or the law specifies it — most rent contracts and some tuition clauses use IGP-M.

Why is the IGP-M sometimes much higher than the IPCA?

Because the IGP-M includes wholesale prices (IPA), which are affected by commodity prices and the exchange rate. When the real devalues, commodities priced in dollars push the IGP-M up faster than consumer prices.

Are these rates monthly or annual?

Annual. For monthly precision, use the Banco Central Calculadora do Cidadão.

Does my data leave my browser?

No. The rates are embedded in the page and the calculation runs locally.

Is this legally valid for court cases?

For estimates and planning, yes. For court-ordered monetary correction, the judge specifies the index, the period and the method, and the authoritative calculation comes from the court accountant or the Banco Central.
