About this tool

BNB began in July 2017 as a token sold in Binance's own funding round, and its first job was a discount: pay the exchange's trading fee in BNB and pay less. That origin still explains most of it. Since 2020 it is also the fuel of BNB Smart Chain, an Ethereum-compatible network where a transaction costs cents rather than dollars, which is why it carries a heavy volume of transfers and swaps. Those cheap fees have a price of their own: the chain is secured by dozens of validators rather than thousands — faster, cheaper and more concentrated at once.

Three things move this price, and only one is technology. Supply is the first: a burn programme destroys BNB every quarter by a published formula, and part of every fee paid on the chain is destroyed as it is paid, aiming to shrink the original 200 million coins to 100 million. The second is the exchange itself. BNB is an exchange token and its price has tracked Binance's fortunes, the legal ones included — in November 2023 the company settled with United States authorities for around 4.3 billion dollars and its founder resigned as chief executive. The third is the perks: when the fee discount or the launch platform changes, the reason to hold the coin changes with it.

For a Brazilian, BNB is rarely the first crypto bought and usually the second: someone already trading on Binance, one of the most used exchanges in the country, buys it because it trims the fee on every trade and because moving value on BNB Chain costs almost nothing. The convenience is real, and so is a risk Bitcoin does not carry — the value of this coin leans on one company staying healthy and legal where it matters. The market has seen the other outcome: FTX's exchange token lost almost everything within days of that exchange collapsing in November 2022. The price above is a market reference from CoinGecko, not an offer, and crypto moves in double digits in a week with no news at all.

Frequently asked questions

Where does this price come from, and how old is the number?

From CoinGecko, which averages the price across exchanges. A scheduled job stores it here every 30 minutes, and the date and time of that quote are printed under the value. The refresh button goes to CoinGecko live from your browser and rewrites the number. Crypto trades every day, so this page never freezes at weekends the way a currency page does.

Why is the price on my exchange different from the one here?

Because this is a market average, not an offer. An exchange quotes a buy and a sell price with a spread between them, charges a trading fee, and in Brazil prices its own dollar conversion into the real. Use this number as the yardstick for any offer.

What is the difference between BNB and BNB Chain?

BNB is the coin; BNB Chain is the network whose fees are paid in it, the way transactions on Ethereum are paid in ether. Every transfer, swap or contract call there costs BNB, so demand for the coin follows how busy the network is.

Is the supply of BNB really shrinking?

Yes, by design: a quarterly burn by a published formula, plus a share of every transaction fee destroyed as it is paid, aiming to cut the original 200 million coins to 100 million. Burnt coins do not come back. But a shrinking supply is not a promise about price — demand is the other half, and it is not fixed.

Does what happens to Binance affect the price of BNB?

Historically yes, and that is what most distinguishes it from a coin with no company behind it. Regulatory action, fines and leadership changes at the exchange have all moved this price. Holding BNB means holding, in part, an opinion about one company and its standing with regulators.
