About this tool

Brazilian contracts, checks, notarial acts and court decisions write monetary amounts in full next to the numeral, in a format that has conventions but no single binding standard. This tool follows the most widely accepted rules: "mil" without "um" before it, "reais" and "centavos" spelled out, and the numeral in parentheses after the text.

The format is not the same as ordinary number-to-words: legal practice in Brazil drops the "um" before "mil", always writes "reais" rather than "real" for one real (a convention, not grammar), and places the numeral between parentheses after the full text as a cross-check.

This tool handles amounts up to 999 billion reais and 99 centavos. It runs entirely in your browser — the amount you type is not transmitted, stored or logged.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official standard for writing amounts in full?

No binding standard. The conventions come from notarial practice, the manual of the Associação dos Notários e Registradores do Brasil, and decades of jurisprudence. This tool follows the most widely accepted rules.

Why is it "mil reais" and not "um mil reais"?

Because Brazilian legal and banking practice drops the "um" before "mil". Writing "um mil" is not wrong grammatically, but it is non-standard in legal documents and can raise questions about authenticity.

Does it handle centavos?

Yes. Amounts with centavos are written as "X reais e Y centavos".

Does my data leave my browser?

No. The conversion runs in JavaScript on your device.

How is this different from the number-to-words tool?

The number-to-words tool converts any number to Portuguese words. This tool is specific to monetary amounts in the legal format — with "reais", "centavos", the parenthetical numeral and the conventions of legal drafting.
