How to use

About this tool

An internet speed test works by transferring a known amount of data and measuring how long it takes. This page downloads a 10 MB file from this server to measure download speed, uploads a 2 MB blob to measure upload speed, and times a round-trip request to measure latency. The arithmetic is straightforward: bits transferred divided by seconds elapsed, reported in megabits per second.

The result is specific to this route — the path between your device and this server at this moment. A different server in a different city would give a different number, because the internet is not one pipe but a web of interconnected networks. The speed your ISP advertises is the theoretical maximum at the last mile; the speed you actually get depends on congestion, the server you are talking to, the time of day, and whether you are on Wi-Fi or a cable. Testing on a wired connection removes the Wi-Fi variable.

Nothing is stored. The download file is a block of random bytes served by the web server, and the upload endpoint discards the data immediately without writing it to disk. The test runs entirely between your browser and this server, with no third-party service involved.

The formula

Download Mbps = (file size in bits) ÷ (transfer time in seconds) ÷ 1,000,000. Upload Mbps = same formula with the uploaded blob. Latency = round-trip time of a HEAD request in milliseconds.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the result different from Speedtest.net?

Because Speedtest.net picks a server near you and opens multiple parallel connections, which saturates the link more effectively. This test uses a single connection to one server, so the number is usually lower — it measures the speed to this server, not the theoretical maximum of your plan.

Is the data I upload stored?

No. The upload endpoint discards the data immediately and returns an empty response. Nothing is written to disk or logged.

Why is latency high?

Latency depends on the physical distance between your device and this server and the number of network hops in between. A server on another continent adds 100-200 ms just from the speed of light in fibre.

Should I test on Wi-Fi or cable?

Cable removes the Wi-Fi variable and gives the clearest picture of what your broadband connection can do. Wi-Fi adds its own bottleneck — distance to the router, interference, the Wi-Fi standard your device supports.

How accurate is this?

Accurate enough to tell whether your connection is in the right ballpark. For a binding measurement against your ISP plan, use the official Anatel tool (Brasil Banda Larga), which follows a regulated methodology.
