Product Pricing Calculator

Find the sale price that covers your cost, taxes, fees and commission and still leaves the profit margin you want.

How to use

  1. Type the cost of the product — everything you pay to have one unit ready to sell.
  2. Fill in the percentages that come out of each sale: taxes, card or marketplace fees, and sales commission.
  3. Type the profit margin you want and read the sale price, with every component broken down in reais.

About this tool

Pricing a product is not adding a percentage to the cost. Taxes, card fees, marketplace commission and your own profit are all percentages of the sale price, not of the cost — so the price has to be found by division, using what accountants call the divisor markup. The formula is price = cost ÷ (1 − (expenses + margin) ÷ 100). A product that costs R$ 50, carries 20% of variable expenses and should leave a 30% margin needs a price of R$ 100: half the price pays the cost, R$ 20 goes to expenses and R$ 30 is profit.

The mistake this tool exists to prevent is the additive one. Adding 20% and 30% to a cost of R$ 50 gives R$ 75, and on that price the R$ 15 of profit is only 20% — you would be working for two thirds of what you planned, and the difference grows fast as the percentages rise. This calculator keeps taxes, fees and commission as separate fields because they usually come from different places (your tax regime, your card processor, your salesperson), and shows each one converted into reais so you can see exactly where the money goes before it becomes profit.

Two limits are worth knowing. First, if expenses plus margin reach 100% there is no valid price at all — the tool says so instead of returning a nonsense number, and you have to cut a percentage or accept less profit. Second, the cost you type should be the full variable cost of one unit: the product itself plus packaging and shipping if you pay for them. Fixed costs such as rent, salaries and software are not in this calculation; they are covered by the total contribution margin of everything you sell, which is what the break-even calculator measures. The maths runs entirely in your browser, so your costs and margins never leave the device.

The formula

Price = cost ÷ (1 − (taxes% + fees% + commission% + margin%) ÷ 100). Each percentage then applies to the resulting price: taxes = price × taxes% ÷ 100, profit = price × margin% ÷ 100. A valid price exists only while the percentages add up to less than 100%.

Frequently asked questions

Why divide the cost instead of adding the percentages to it?

Because taxes, fees, commission and margin are percentages of the sale price, not of the cost. Dividing by (1 − total%) is the only way to make the price cover all of them exactly; adding them to the cost always leaves you with less margin than you planned.

What counts as the product cost?

Everything you pay to have one unit ready for the customer: purchase or production cost, packaging, and inbound or outbound freight if it comes out of your pocket. Rent, salaries and other fixed costs stay out — they are covered by the margin of all your sales together.

Should I include the card fee in the taxes field?

Use the separate fields: taxes for your tax regime (Simples Nacional, ICMS, ISS), fees for the card processor or marketplace, and commission for salespeople. The tool adds them up, but keeping them apart makes the breakdown in reais readable.

What if the percentages add up to 100% or more?

No price works in that case, and the tool tells you instead of showing a number. Every real of revenue would already be committed before paying the cost of the product, so you have to cut expenses or accept a smaller margin.

Is the margin the same as the markup?

No. The margin here is a share of the sale price; the markup is how much the price sits above the cost. The tool shows the equivalent markup underneath the result so you can compare with a supplier who quotes that way.

Do my costs and margins leave my browser?

No. The whole calculation happens locally in JavaScript on your device — nothing is transmitted, saved or shared.
