Polygon started in Mumbai in 2017 as Matic Network and took its present name in 2021. Polygon PoS, its main product, is a separate blockchain running Ethereum's software unchanged, so applications move across without being rewritten, and it charges a fraction of a centavo per transaction. The detail the marketing skips: it is a sidechain, not a rollup. It has its own validators and writes periodic checkpoints back to Ethereum, so what guards your money there is that validator set, not Ethereum. Cheap and compatible is why the big consumer experiments were built here — Reddit's avatars, Starbucks' loyalty programme, Nike's collectibles — and several of them have since been wound down.
The token changed name and job in September 2024: MATIC became POL, one for one, and POL now pays for transactions and is what validators stake. Ten billion existed at the start, with a continuing emission for validators and the treasury, so it is not scarce by design. The price mostly follows Ethereum scaling as a whole — it tracks ether closely — plus newer rollups competing on the same ground with a stronger security story, plus the project's own changes of direction: the zkEVM chain launched with fanfare in 2023 was later wound down. Fees here are tiny by design, so even a busy chain collects very little to hand back.
Most Brazilians end up on Polygon without choosing it: it is where sending a dollar stablecoin costs cents instead of reais, so exchanges offer it as the default cheap route, and that transfer is by far the commonest real use of the network here. Two warnings follow. Sending on the wrong network — a Polygon transfer to an address the exchange watches only on Ethereum — is frequent and expensive, and recovery depends on goodwill. And you still need a little POL to pay the fee, even when what you move is dollars. The value at the top is a CoinGecko reference averaged across exchanges, saved every half hour.

Because this is an average reference and an exchange sets its own prices, with a spread between buying and selling, a trading fee, and usually another fee to withdraw. A difference of a couple of per cent is normal, and larger on a small order.
Effectively yes. From September 2024 MATIC was replaced by POL at one to one, and exchanges converted their customers' balances automatically. Coins in your own wallet are yours to swap through the official migration contract. The reference used here is still filed under the old identifier at CoinGecko, but the number it returns is POL's.
No, and the difference is who guards the money. Arbitrum is a rollup: it publishes its transaction data on Ethereum, so anyone can verify or rebuild the chain from it. Polygon PoS is a sidechain with its own validators, checkpointing periodically. Polygon is older and very cheap; the rollups have the stronger security argument.
Because you are not using Ethereum. The transfer happens entirely on Polygon's own chain, which has room to spare and prices its blocks accordingly. The catch is that both ends must be on Polygon: the wallet or exchange you send to has to credit deposits on that network.
