PDF to Text

Extract all the text from a PDF — page by page, with word and character counts. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use

  1. Choose a PDF file (up to 200 MB).
  2. Click "Extract text" — the tool reads every page and extracts the text content.
  3. Copy the text or download it as a TXT file. Word and character counts are shown above the text.

About this tool

Sometimes you need the text inside a PDF, not the PDF itself — to paste into another document, to search through it, to feed it into a translation tool, or simply to read it without a PDF viewer. This tool extracts every piece of text from every page and presents it in a plain text box you can copy or download.

The extraction reads the text layer that the PDF carries — the same text you can select with the cursor in a PDF viewer. It does not run OCR: if the PDF is a scanned image with no text layer, no text will be found, and the tool suggests using the OCR tool instead.

Page breaks are marked with a separator line so you can tell where one page ends and the next begins. The word and character counts give you a quick size estimate. Everything runs in your browser — the file is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read and processed entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted, stored or logged.

Why was no text found?

The PDF probably contains scanned images without a text layer. Use the Image OCR tool to recognize text from images.

Does it preserve formatting?

No — the output is plain text. Bold, italic, columns and tables are lost because plain text has no formatting. The tool extracts the raw text content in reading order.

Can I extract text from a password-protected PDF?

No. The tool cannot open encrypted PDFs. Remove the password first or use the Unlock PDF tool.
