The cost of a trip by car is a simple division: distance divided by consumption gives the litres needed, multiplied by the price per litre gives the total cost. The cost per kilometre — the number that lets you compare driving with other transport — is the fuel price divided by the consumption. A car that does 12 km/L with gasoline at R$ 5.79 costs R$ 0.48 per kilometre in fuel alone.
The calculation does not include tolls, tyres, maintenance, insurance or depreciation, which together can double or triple the real per-kilometre cost of owning a car. For a simple "how much fuel will this trip cost" question, the fuel calculation is enough. For a comparison against a bus ticket, a flight or an app ride, the total cost of ownership matters — and that is a much larger number.
