The factors are not approximations. Since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, the inch is defined as exactly 25.4 millimetres, which makes the foot exactly 0.3048 m, the yard 0.9144 m and the mile 1609.344 m. Everything else follows from those definitions. The metre itself has been redefined three times: it started in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole, became a platinum-iridium bar kept near Paris, and since 1983 it is the distance light travels in vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.
