The bitcoin price in reais with the time the quote was taken, a two-way converter and what actually moves this price.
Bitcoin (BTC): R$ 398.441,00, +1,35%.
Bitcoin is a payment network with a money supply fixed by its own rules, and that combination is the whole argument for it. New coins appear only as the reward for adding a block to the chain, that reward halves roughly every four years, and the total will never exceed 21 million. April 2024 cut it from 6.25 to 3.125 coins per block; the next halving falls around 2028. Three things move the price more than the rest: flows into and out of the spot funds that hold real coins, approved in the United States in January 2024; American interest rates, since bitcoin pays no dividend and competes with whatever a safe asset yields; and the absence of any earnings figure to anchor it to.
The chart is a series of violent cycles rather than a line. Bitcoin has twice lost roughly three quarters of its value from a peak: through 2018, and from November 2021 to November 2022, the second worsened by the collapse of Terra, of the lender Celsius and of the FTX exchange. Each fall was eventually followed by a new high — the part enthusiasts quote — and none of it was predictable, which is the part they leave out. Assume the amount you convert here can be worth substantially less in a month, because it has been, more than once.
The value at the top is a CoinGecko reference, an average across many exchanges, stored by a job that runs every half hour, with the exact moment of the quote printed beside it. It is not the price you will be charged: a Brazilian exchange quotes its own buying and selling prices with a spread between them, takes a trading fee and charges again on withdrawal, so the closed price differs by a percent or two, and by more on a small order. The other warning is custody: coins in an exchange account are a line in that company's ledger, as Mt. Gox in 2014 and FTX in 2022 showed.
From CoinGecko, which averages the price across many exchanges, saved here by a job that runs every 30 minutes; the date and time of that quote are printed under the value. Press "Refresh rate" and your browser fetches the current one directly and rewrites the page. Bitcoin trades every day, so this number moves on a Sunday.
Because this is an average reference and an exchange is a shop. It quotes a buying and a selling price with a spread between them, charges a trading fee, and usually charges again to withdraw. A couple of per cent away from the reference is ordinary, and wider on small orders.
It is the rule that halves the reward for mining a block roughly every four years: 50 coins at the start, 3.125 since April 2024, about 1.5625 from 2028, on the way to a cap of 21 million. Because it is scheduled and public, the argument is never whether it happens but whether the market has already priced it in, and there is no settled answer.
No. One coin divides into 100 million units called satoshis, and buying a fraction is the norm. That is why the table above starts at a thousandth of a coin instead of at one.
Three worth naming. Custody: coins held on an exchange depend on that exchange staying solvent, and two of the largest in history did not. Irreversibility: a transfer sent to the wrong address cannot be undone by anyone. And tax: selling at a profit in Brazil is a reportable event, and the rules on what is exempt have changed recently, so check the current ones instead of assuming a small sale is invisible.
