The tradition comes from central Europe — the German silver and golden wedding customs date to the Middle Ages — and spread to Brazil through Portuguese and Italian immigration.
Not every year between 1 and 100 has a universally agreed name. The milestones up to 15, and then every five years up to 100, are the ones that appear in most sources. In between, some lists assign a material to every single year, but the assignments vary — year 16 might be sapphire or turquoise depending on who wrote the list.
