How to use

  1. Read the commercial pound at the top, with the moment the quote was taken printed under it.
  2. Type the tuition instalment, the rent or the shopping in pounds to see it in reais — or a budget in reais to see how far it goes.
  3. Press "Refresh rate" for the live value, or type the rate your bank gave for the transfer.

About this tool

The pound is a narrower interest in Brazil than the dollar or the euro, and whoever follows it usually has a concrete reason: a tuition instalment at a British university, a deposit for a flat share, a salary paid by a company in London, a trip. What moves it is British — the Bank of England, the monthly inflation and wage figures, and the government bond market, which in the United Kingdom has an unusual power over the currency. In September 2022 a budget announcement nobody had costed sent gilts into a spiral and dragged the pound to its weakest level ever against the dollar within days. This currency reacts to domestic politics with a violence larger ones rarely show.

It is also the oldest currency still in circulation anywhere, and it kept a medieval arithmetic until 1971: twelve pence to the shilling, twenty shillings to the pound, which is why old British novels are full of prices nobody can add up today. The modern history has three landmarks. Black Wednesday in 1992, when the pound was forced out of the European exchange rate mechanism in a single afternoon. The decision, held to ever since, not to adopt the euro. And the referendum of June 2016, whose result produced the sharpest one-day fall of a major currency in modern times and set a lower plateau the pound has never fully climbed back from.

The value at the top comes from a stored quote refreshed every half hour, with the time of the quote next to it. Two warnings matter especially here. First, this is the commercial rate: an international transfer to pay a university carries the bank spread and the IOF for that operation, so the amount arriving in pounds is smaller than a straight multiplication suggests — which is how people end up paying tuition short. Type the rate the bank gave you into the rate field to see the true cost. Second, the pounds you owe are fixed and the reais you need are not.

Frequently asked questions

Where does this rate come from, and how old is the number?

From the market feed for the pound against the real, saved here by a job that runs every 30 minutes; the date and time of the quote are printed under the value. The refresh button fetches the current one live from your browser. Outside trading hours the number holds at the last close.

Why does my bank charge more than the rate on this page?

Because this is the commercial rate, the wholesale reference. An international transfer, a card purchase and a purchase of banknotes each add their own spread on top of it, plus the IOF for that type of operation. Ask for the closed rate with everything included and type it into the rate field above.

Why is one pound worth more than one dollar or one euro?

Only because of the size of the unit, a historical accident that says nothing about the strength of the economy. What matters is how much the unit buys and how its value changes over time. The pound has been the biggest unit among the major currencies for centuries, through severe crises.

I pay a British university. Which rate applies to me?

Not this one directly. An international transfer is closed at the rate your bank offers on the day: the commercial rate plus their spread, with IOF on top. Universities bill in pounds and the conversion happens when the payment clears, so the cost in reais of an instalment agreed months earlier is only known on the day it settles.

Why did the pound fall so much in 2016?

Because of the referendum on leaving the European Union. The result caught the market positioned the other way, the pound had its sharpest single-day fall in modern history, and it settled at a lower level it has not fully recovered.
